Korle-Bu (the valley of the Korle lagoon) Hospital was established in 1923 and is the largest teaching hospital in Ghana; it became a teaching hospital in 1962. It is affiliated with the University of Ghana Medical School and now has seventeen separate clinical and diagnostic departments. The hospital occupies a large campus and is the main tertiary hospital in Southern Ghana. It is also home to three centres of excellence, which are in the specialties of cardiothoracic surgery, reconstructive surgery and radiotherapy and was the first hospital in Ghana to carry out a kidney transplant.
Korle-Bu is also the third largest hospital in Africa and has a reputation which extends to bordering nations. The Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Burns Centre, the National Cardiothoracic Centre and the National Centre for Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine are among the departments that receive and treat patients from neighbouring countries such as Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Togo.
The departments incorporated into Korle-Bu Hospital include; Medicine; Child Health; Obstetrics and Gynaecology; Pathology; Laboratories; Radiology; Anaesthesia; Surgery; Polyclinic; Accident Centre; and the Surgical/Medical Emergency departments.
Korle-Bu also provides sophisticated and scientific investigative procedures and specialisation in various fields such as Neuro-surgery, Dentistry, Eye, ENT, Renal, Orthopaedics, Oncology, Dermatology, Cardiothoracic, Radiotherapy, Radiodiagnosis, Paediatric Surgery and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Burns Unit.

Registration fee at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital: $200
Current mentorship fee for elective at Korle Hospital: $ 90 per week.
Accommodation fee: $250 or $308 for 4 weeks elective.

All fees including the Elective Ghana service fees are payable when you receive the confirmation letter upon arrival in Ghana.
Elective students don’t receive stipends at the hospital and rather pay a registration fee and internship fee which varies for different hospitals.
Electives students are not provided with food in the hospital so they are expected to solicit for their own funds for example from a scholarship program
Elective Ghana Ltd does not provide insurance for students so each individual student is expected to have their own travel and medical insurance.
All students are expected to disclose to Elective Ghana Ltd if they have any peculiar medical condition that may require special attention like uncontrolled seizure disorder, acute or episodic psychiatric condition etc.
