MEDICAL OUTREACH PROGRAM

Elective Ghana (Medical Outreach Program) is a public health outreach mission providing students healthcare services in remote communities in Ghana. We have an organization called Medics Aid Projects which we encourage students coming on electives to source out medical supplies to support our medical outreach programs and to donate to hospitals they will be having their electives. Medics Aid Projects was founded on 29th November 2013 in Accra, Ghana. After many years of planning from 2011. It is affiliated to the Elective Ghana, an organization that facilitates medical elective placements for medical students and volunteers from around the world to Ghana.

 Medics Aid Projects is a non-profit and charity organization, legally registered in Ghana to offer philanthropic medical outreach services, donate medical supplies and to supporting educational health projects to enhance the health of people living in beneficiary communities. It is an initiative aimed at exposing international volunteers, pre-medical students, medical students, doctors, researchers, global health students and public health students to medical outreach services. Our programs would include Health projects, Health Research, Educational projects and Social projects.

 We rely on working with private, local and international organizations to facilitate health development projects in Ghana etc. We are committed to providing medical aid to rural clinics and hospitals in Ghana for quality healthcare delivery. We encourage local stakeholders to volunteer their time alongside international volunteers to offer their expertise for the sustainability of our programs. We have a facebook page www.facebook.com/medicsaidprojects also we are setting up our website www.medicsaidprojects.org.

Early last 2016 year our students who had done electives with as started donating towards our Medical Outreach Screening Projects. Between last year 2016 and this year 2017 we have been able to carry out  three successful outreach programs.  Earlier we have had a challenge in starting our programs due to luck of medical supplies which is why we encourage students coming on electives to source out medical supplies to support our medical outreach programs and to donate to hospitals they will be having their placements.

Medics Aid Projects relies on volunteers and donations. We do not charge for our services. So if you’re interested in helping us out through corporate involvement or sponsorship please send us an email to medicsaidprojects@gmail.com  Copied to electiveinghana@gmail.com

Our community outreach programs would be executed when there are students on electives doted around Ghana to be held in a rural community, market centers etc. in Ghana. We call for support from private, corporate institutions and organizations. The program would be segmented into different components to respond to social challenges facing people across the different demographics. These include;

  1. Free medical consultation and distribution of medication through offering of counseling for healthy living. To be done by medical doctors and student doctors. They will be screen for typhoid fever, tuberculosis and cholera, their ears and eyes examined, offered counseling in adolescent reproductive health and educated on water-borne diseases.
  2. General health screening which includes body mass index, random blood sugar for (Diabetes), breast screening, high blood pressure, hypertension, cholesterol and uric acid. Other areas to be screen are blood diagnostic test for malaria, prostate specific antigen, Hepatitis B and C as well as dental optical consultation, HIV and AIDS Counselling Testing. It is unfortunate that some people do not take care of their health issues seriously, even when they noticed conditions that needed urgent medical care.
  3. A hand-washing exercise to emphasize the importance of hand washing in our daily lives. Activities: Children will be taught basic hygienic practices and encourage to wash their hands with soap and clean water before eating. E.g a demonstration of hand washing to give children the idea of how to wash their hands thoroughly.
  4. Heart to Heart interaction between volunteers of Medics Aid Projects and the youth of the communities on issues relating to their sexuality.
  5. Health Education and Promotion: changing the focus from cure to prevention. Below is a list of supplies that will aid in the success of the medical outreach.
